artist statement

My work is heavily influenced by abstracted forms or figures that oftentimes hold sentimental and personal value. I seek out ways to express their significance to a wider audience, which typically means aiming for relatability without fully defining the meaning of the work itself.

I find myself depicting topics that are heavy in emotion, such as grief, as it has been a prevalent theme in my life throughout the past 5 years. My work that represents a figure or form is oftentimes portrayed in a peaceful or memorable way, as I tend to take inspiration from my own personal experiences. Over the past year or so, I have been specifically implementing cats within my work, as they represent femininity, independence, and comfort. These themes, as well as the figure itself, challenge the harshness of grief, as focusing on them will help infiltrate the coping process.

In relation to the materiality, I have been using recycled paper to represent the ending stages of the grieving process. It is essentially turning the idea of old into new, and starting over. Currently, I am experimenting with abstract visual forms, as well as manipulating the “canvas” to further my narrative. I am pushing myself to work on a much larger scale using recycled paper, to really capture the attention of my audience. Furthermore, I am considering experimenting with mixed materials, such as thin fabrics, metal wire, and tea bags, rather than pictorial depictions.

My ultimate goal as an artist is to not necessarily allow the audience to understand the exact context nor history of the image that I am depicting, though it is part of it, but to relate and build off of their own experiences as well.

biography

My name is Alyse Guillory and I was born on May 2, 2003 in my hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana. From a young age I was drawn to visual arts and the process of making my own little collection. I began by including figures and meaningful objects in my work, which has translated to the subjects I include currently.

Throughout my life thus far, I have experienced a plethora of bizarre events that ultimately define how my work and I are today. Within the past three years, a prevalent theme of my life has been grief, which is a topic that I am still experimenting within my body of work as of now.

I currently reside in Denton, Texas where I recently graduated from the University of North Texas. I majored in studio art with a concentration in Drawing and Painting, and I also received a minor in art history.
